Moxbournienna Sonatas 1st mvt

another improvisation by Rupert Guenther (violin) & Melvyn Cann (piano)

Story

The Moxbournienna Sonatas are a 2 CD set of recordings of 2 three-movement sonatas of my improvised classical music, commissioned and recorded by the ABC Classic FM in Melbourne, Australia.

This is the 1st movement Largo Spirituoso from the first sonata.

In these sonatas, the classic combination of violin and piano drew on Melvyn and my influences of our respective life journeys living in wintery Melbourne, and important formative times spent living, studying, and performing professionally in Vienna and Oxford (hence the name of the sonatas being a composite name of the three cities).

For both Melvyn and myself, improvised classical music is a very spiritual process, and we enjoyed the opportunity to work together for these particular new sonatas.

There are no second takes or overdubs, what you here is what happened on the day. This kind of recording is very live! Also my good Italian concert violin was under repair at the time when the recordings had been scheduled for, and I had to borrow a local reputable maker's best student model violin for the session! However the dear little instrument acquitted itself quite well. Nothing a like a new violin on the day of a concert or recording to explore new ideas on!
