New Letters to Esterhazy Concert

“New Letters To Esterhazy” sonatas are a rich and imaginative contemporary depiction of new pathways and ideals for humanity, articulated through music. In this program we are hearing Sonata 1, set in 5 movements. Each movement of the sonatas depict letters by the composer in 21st century Australia, sent back in time to Joseph Haydn in the 18th century Austro-Hungarian court of Esterhazy. They are full of new visions for humanity, sunlight, and hope, yet tenderly handle moments of despair, winter darkness and delicate new growth with great compassion.

The concert concludes with three short new works “Hakone Maple” styled on the ancient tradition of Japanese shakuhachi flute music, “So Many Stars”, an Arabic influenced composition and “Wandjina” a short work describing the mythological Wandjina figure and its relationship with the dessert landscape and ancient culture of the land.

Journeys Concert - WA Museum Boola Bardip Perth

The “Journeys” concert on one level explores through music, large screen imagery and narration, human civilisations over a timespan of a million years, and their endless movement from place to place. It especially looks into the internal and external forces and needs which underlie these migrations - forces which have pushed humanity whether ready or not, from basic safety and the needs of shelter and food, through concepts of community, inclusion or exclusion, to grander scales of power and its laws, but also the often dramatic changes and upheavals wrought by natural forces throughout time. Equally, on another level, the concert examines the psychology of humanity’s responses to crises, of where we either make the choice of contracting in fear or blame, or where we continue finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most painful ones, and thus a reason to continue living and finding steps forward.

Damascus - meditation and wellness concert

The Middle-East and North Africa of antiquity was a place of science, scholarship, astronomy, art, education, architecture and culture, way more advanced than its European counterparts for thousands of years. The Damascus concert using musical flavours typical of the plain song and chant styles in Eleusinian, Gregorian, Byzantine and Arabic music, traces the journey of humanity in melismatic improvisation-style musical reflections, and offers a window into the heightened atmosphere and illumination in the high cultures of that time.
